Quack About

Almost a month later: A second game of 40k

I came into this new edition with the full intent to play more 40k. But did that happen? Nah!

I blame Blood Bowl (I always blame Blood Bowl when it comes to playing other games... I love Blood Bowl but leagues are a commitment that takes up a weekly slot of game time!). I also blame the release of a new set of Star Wars Unlimited cards...

But anyway, I went to a friend's house and played 40k last night. Some good ork on ork action.

I had a lot of fun (as you would expect to with a bunch of orks on the table), but I lost.

It was a close game score wise, but I think there are some takeaways for me.

  1. Transports are dangerous.

Oh man, hazardous rolls triggering on a 1 and 2 hurts. I had to combat disembark, and it wiped out 8 boyz from my squad of 20. I will be much more careful about positioning of vehicles, especially when they are so laden, and try to avoid having to combat disembark. At least they didn't get entirely wiped out like they would have done last edition, but still!

  1. The first waaaagh is the deepest.

My friend got first waaagh1, and in doing so he took out a good chunk of my army. More annoyingly, it meant he had 5+ invulnerable saves when I was trying to hit him back with my own waaaaaggghhh! I shouldn't be scared to do a turn 1 waaagh, especially in 1k point games (which I tend to play) and slightly smaller battlefields (this one was missing a few inches of width and maybe one inch of length, nothing major).

  1. Characters are very very helpful.

I only had a Warboss. My friend's weirdly, painboy, bannernob, and big boss caused me some headaches. I think there is a balance to strike, but a mob of 20 boyz with either a bannernob or a painboy would have gone a long way. Shove that on the middle objective and job's a good'un.

Some lessons, but a good fun game. I am liking the force dispositions so far, the area terrain layouts do give a lot of cover, but make objectives feel more intuitive and safer to stand on. No more exposing a squishy squad, knowing it will die, just to score some victory points. Only a couple of games played, so rules are still feeling a bit alien, but we'll get there!

A new ork codex coming in a couple of weeks, and a space marine after that, will probably shake things up a lot! I would like to get one more game in before then so I can put into action my takeaways from last game...

At this rate, I won't, but we will see!
