First full 40k game of the edition
Last night I played my first full game of 11th edition 40k. It was only 1000 points, but it counts!
I played Black Templars, and my brother played Chaos Space Marines. The missions meant that he had t hold the centre objectives and perform actions, whilst I just needed to consistently destroy more units than I lost.
I lost the game, but it was close.
We only played 3 battle rounds1, and at the end I had three units alive, he had two, and the score was my 46 to his 57.
The game was fun, if very cover heavy. Some of my thoughts I sent to a mate:
First 1k points game with my brother last night, followed the terrain layout as close as possible.
It was good fun, only had time for 3 full rounds as we played a blood bowl game before. I had 3 units and he had 2 left. I lost 46 to 57. One more round and we think it would have been a margin of 1 point, and then swing again to a clear victor depending on secondary draw and charge rolls.
Terrain layout and rules definitely hampered shooting, almost all shooting was into cover -1BS, and the solid terrain meant a few units just never got shot at at all.
Missions were interesting, asymmetrical nature of them is fun, but some feel much easier to score at 1k points than others! I might try something other than purge at 1k points!
Something I tried for this game was putting together a bit of a narrative in my head. Who are these armies and why are they fighting? With the launch box’s focus on Armageddon, that is where this battle was set. I used info from the lore book to flesh it out. You can read the lore here, along with a turn by turn narrative summary of what happened.
It is brief, but this is the sort of writing I would love to try out more for my games, particularly 40k. It would be nice to give some personality to my little plastic men. This is also the sort of content that I might create a separate bear blog site for. I could build out the pages and feeds for my different armies and campaign arcs… Something worth thinking about!
It is still hot out, so I am off to drink some more water!
Quack
another caveat to it being my first “full” game of the edition!↩
