Quack About

One Small Step For Bear, A giant leap for Quack Kind

Okay, maybe Bear is where I want to write?

I have tried writing a Substack, and I have been enjoying that fine enough, but I have found that it is hyper-fixated on growth - got to pump those numbers up baby!

I know I could just not engage with the growth, not look at the analytics, not check my subscriber count, not fret about posting with a regular cadence, but I am just not that much in control. If I see settings that promote growth, and see everyone else on Substack seemingly thinking about growth, I’m gonna think about growth.

I might still post there, mainly because I have things set up a bit there. It might just be because I bit off more than I can chew, a touch of burnout? I committed early to doing a weekly “newsletter” where I went over the games I had played recently, as well as a weekly actual play of Delve1, and then other articles on tournament reports and game reviews.

Quickly, without really meaning to, I turned what was meant to be a new hobby to document and share my other hobbies into a chore.

So now I am here, maybe, let’s see. I stumbled here after reading a blog post shared in a Discord server, and immediately felt drawn by the minimalist graphics. I felt calm, my attention solely on the page I was reading. It was nice. Also, really good post, I will try and find it again!

I hope to write here more freely, capture my thoughts without too much performative overlay. As I said, we’ll see how that goes.

I hope to join in with this month’s Bear Blog Carnival (I still have a couple of days! Dammit, a deadline!), and I am looking forward to getting to grips with markdown2 and trying out different themes. I was planning to do old school Warhammer 40k battle reports on Substack, a la early 10s White Dwarf, so I will see if I can build around that sort of aesthetic.

I really need to fix up my laptop so that I can get stuck into this properly…

Anyhoo, thanks for reading!

  1. A solo map drawing game, it is good fun!

  2. In my first draft, I but the wrong slash for line-breaks - I have a lot to learn!!
