Opening Warhammer 40,000 Armageddon

Today's the day! The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 has arrived.

After much humming and ahing, I decided to split the box with a friend. I got the books, the cards and the Space Marines, and he got the Orks to start his new army.

We went down to our friendly local game store this morning to pick it up, and took it straight back to mine. We spent the rest of the day sat inside at my kitchen table, with clippers and plastic glue to hand, putting all of the models together. Instead of being outside on a lovely warm day, we were sat in a haze of fumes and plastic shavings.

It was the best day lobbying I have had in a long time.

There is no way I would have built my half of the box today if we had not done it together. They probably would have sat on their sprees on the shelf for a good few months. We were having a sort of race, although I was on tea and food duties so I am not sure it was a fair contest! We ribbed each other for any mistakes we made, and compared the new models. We were both in awe at the size of the Warboss, loved the chicken legs of the Dakkarig, and admired the banner carried by the Space Marines.

After we put all the models together1, we played a game with them. We didn't have nearly enough terrain2, and we weren't using full detachment rules because we were tired, but we had a blast. My favourite moment was my standard bearer failing a bunch of saves, before passing four feel no pain rolls on 6s (he only needed a 4!). This was immediately followed by my friend rolling double 6s to make a charge elsewhere. Epic.

I look forward to paying some more 11th edition, especially now I have a full 2k points army painted up. I am now going to read the new lore book, and look over the two decks of cards.

Today has been a good way to start the new edition.

  1. Minus the librarian, that heretic is not welcome in the Black Templars!

  2. There was some confusion as we thought the new rules came with terrain layouts, but it doesn't look like they do? I am pleased it isn't the default, but still confused as to where they are/where I should find them.
